🐸 About Adega Belém
Adega Belém is a boutique, low‑intervention winery tucked inside a former car repair shop in Lisbon’s Belém neighborhood. Working in tiny batches of 500–2500 bottles, Catarina and David craft expressive wines from native Iberian varieties, guided by scientific curiosity, cultural storytelling, and a refusal to follow dogma.
Catarina, originally from Carcavelos, began her career as an evolutionary biologist studying Iberian tree frogs. Her research into how frogs choose mates, sometimes sticking to local dialects, sometimes embracing outsiders, became the inspiration for Adega Belém’s tree‑frog logo and its philosophy of blending difference to spark innovation.
David, born in Frankfurt, spent years as a social anthropologist, researching how societies relate to otherness, from distant islands to imagined pasts and even wine itself. That lens now shapes the winery’s approach: thoughtful, playful, and deeply attuned to the cultural meaning of what we drink.
