A white wine that embodies the estate’s dedication to organic, minimal-intervention winemaking and to the preservation of ancestral techniques alongside judicious use of oak. The grapes for this cuvée are sourced exclusively from the Quinta’s own vineyards, planted on deep granitic soils more than two decades ago and farmed according to biodynamic principles. While the estate works with a range of local varieties, Amphora + Barrica Branco is fashioned as a field blend auctioned from those plots most suited to skin-contact and amphora ageing. Total destemming followed by a gentle pressing releases juice whose pH and phenolic content reflect rigorous canopy management and low yields per vine.

Fermentation takes place spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in a combination of traditional clay amphorae—where the wine remains for six months—and neutral 500-litre French oak barrels for an additional six months. During this year of elevation, periodic bâtonnage in the barrels coaxes texture from the lees, while the amphorae lend an earthy, mineral spine and allow micro-oxygenation without overt wood influence. No sulfur dioxide is added at any stage of production, ensuring that the wine remains a pure expression of both grape and site.

In the glass, Amphora + Barrica Branco displays a pale gold hue shot through with green highlights. The nose opens with an immediate impression of green apple and white nectarine, followed by nuances of chamomile, wet stone, and a faint whisper of wood-smoke derived from the amphora. On the palate, the wine’s texture is both tactile and precise: a gentle phenolic grip underscores flavors of lemon oil, pear skin, and flinty minerality. The oak- barrel component contributes a subtle creaminess, but never dominates, allowing the wine’s innate clarity and energy to shine through. A lingering finish of salinity and fresh herbs cements its sense of place and speaks to the Alentejo’s warm days and cool nights.

Amphora + Barrica Branco is best served at 10–12 °C, allowing its aromatics to blossom while preserving its vibrant acidity. Its structural balance and layered complexity make it an ideal partner for shellfish in light sauces, flinty goat cheeses, or simply to be savored on its own as a study in the art of modern-rustic Portuguese winemaking.

Amoreira da Torre

Amoreira da Torre stands as a testament to centuries of Portuguese agrarian heritage, rooted in a landscape where human occupation spans over 6,000 years. The Quinta da Amoreira da Torre, with its iconic 16th-century tower, chapel, and Manueline-style fence, forms part of an agro-cultural panorama that has defined the region’s identity since the age of solar towers around Évora. Acquired by the current family nearly 100 years ago, the estate's historic legacy is interwoven with modern excellence, creating a unique narrative that bridges tradition and contemporary sustainable practices.

The vineyards of Amoreira da Torre benefit from a terroir characterized by granitic soils, abundant groundwater, and a Mediterranean climate, elevated at around 240 meters above sea level and situated approximately 72 kilometers from the Atlantic. These conditions nurture free-growing grapevines that truly express the natural character of the land. Since the plantation of the current vineyard in 2001 over 20 hectares, every aspect of cultivation has been carefully managed to respect the innate qualities of the Portuguese castas grown in this region, resulting in grapes of remarkable purity and authenticity.

Under the guidance of winemaker and enologist Paulo Sendin, Amoreira da Torre has embraced sustainable practices with unwavering commitment. In a pioneering move within the Alentejo region, the estate converted its entire vineyard and wine production to organic methods in 2005, becoming the first to certify its wines biologically by the CVRA. This philosophy of minimal intervention is evident in every stage of production: from the meticulous management of the vineyards to the use of natural, indigenous yeasts during fermentation, ensuring that the wines remain a genuine expression of their terroir without any corrective adjustments to the must.

The result is a portfolio of wines that reflect both the rich history and the distinctive vitality of the region. Amoreira da Torre’s wines embody an authenticity that springs from a deep respect for nature and an adherence to traditional methods combined with modern sustainable techniques. Their commitment to organic viticulture, architectural heritage, and the art of minimal intervention creates wines of exceptional character, inviting wine-educated readers to experience the genuine spirit of the Alentejo in every sip.
