Suertes del Marqués produces Suertes Cool in the Valle de la Orotava on the northern side of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Established in 2006, the winery is committed to showcasing the unique terroir of this volcanic appellation through indigenous grape varietals and traditional viticulture. The primary grape in NatCool is Listán Negro, complemented by other local varieties, including Tintilla, Vijariego Negro, and Baboso Negro. The vineyards are cultivated using the traditional cordon trenzado method, where the vine branches are woven together, optimizing sunlight exposure and air circulation across the varied altitudes of 300 to 750 meters above sea level.
Suertes del Marqués employs notably eco-friendly production practices. Fermentation occurs with wild yeasts in uncoated concrete vats, and the use of sulfites is minimized. Aging takes place in small French oak foudres. The winery's dedication to quality and sustainability is evident in its careful vineyard management, which includes the application of biodynamic principles. This holistic approach aims to capture the distinctive terroir of the Canary Islands, focusing on purity and authentic expression.
Tasting notes for Suertes del Marqués NatCool red wine often describe a light-bodied and vibrant wine with a distinctive volcanic minerality. Aromas of fresh red fruits, such as cherry and raspberry, are typically present, often accompanied by subtle earthy undertones and a hint of spice. On the palate, the wine is characterized by its juicy texture, lively acidity, and soft tannins, making it approachable and easy to drink. The influence of the volcanic soils contributes a unique savory and sometimes slightly smoky character to the finish. This wine is often recommended to be served slightly chilled, highlighting its freshness and making it a versatile pairing for various dishes, including lighter meats, grilled vegetables, and even some seafood. The NatCool concept, an initiative championed by Dirk Niepoort, emphasizes the production of naturally made, easy-drinking wines with low intervention, often bottled in one-liter formats.
