Poças
In the heart of Portugal's Douro Valley, a family legacy unfolds with Poças Wines. Established in 1918 by Manoel Poças Júnior, the company has become synonymous with quality Port and Douro DOC wines, all while remaining proudly independent and Portuguese-owned for over a century.
Manoel Poças Júnior's initial focus was on selling grape spirits for Port production. However, his passion for wine soon led him to establish his own company and open offices in Vila Nova de Gaia, the historic center of Port production. Over time, he passed his knowledge and dedication onto his children and grandchildren, ensuring the continuation of the Poças family legacy. Today, the winery is run by the 4th generation, with Maria Manuel Maia leading viticulture, Paulo Pintão overseeing production and administration, and Pedro Poças Pintão handling sales and marketing.
Poças' commitment to quality starts in the vineyards. They own three estates in the Douro Valley – Quinta das Quartas, Quinta de Santa Bárbara, and Quinta de Vale de Cavalos. Each estate boasts unique characteristics, contributing to the diversity of Poças wines. The schistose soils, steep slopes, and scorching summer sun of the Douro Valley present a demanding environment. Poças embraces sustainable practices, working in harmony with the land. Low yields and meticulous hand-harvesting ensure exceptional grapes that truly reflect the Douro's unique terroir.
Poças' reputation was built on their Old Tawny Ports, aged in oak barrels for extended periods, resulting in wines of remarkable depth and complexity. However, they haven't rested on their laurels. Over the past three decades, they've increasingly focused on showcasing the potential of Douro DOC wines. Utilizing indigenous grape varieties like Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, and Touriga Franca, Poças crafts expressive red wines known for their bold character and structure.
While respecting time-honored techniques like foot treading for Port, Poças embraces innovation in the winery. Modern temperature control methods and aging vessels are used alongside traditional practices. This allows them to achieve optimal results while maintaining the essence of the Douro Valley in every bottle.
Poças Wines stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of family, a commitment to quality, and a deep respect for the land. Their journey of excellence continues, offering us a diverse range of Port and Douro DOC wines that tell the captivating story of the Poças family and the soul of Portugal's Douro Valley.
