Penhó Wines' Dialectic is a vibrant red wine that showcases the unique character of the Vinho Verde region. A blend of Vinhão, Rabo de Anho, and Padeiro de Basto grapes, it undergoes a carbonic maceration process, which involves fermenting whole grape bunches in sealed tanks. This technique results in a wine with fresh, fruity aromas and a light, refreshing palate. Dialectic is aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve its youthful character, making it a perfect companion for casual gatherings and lighter fare.

Penhó Wines

Penhó Wines is a young but passionate project nestled in the heart of Portugal's Vinho Verde region. Founded in 2017, it's the story of a family returning to its roots and crafting unique, natural wines that celebrate the region's traditions.

The Moreira family's history with winemaking stretches back for generations. After a two-decade hiatus, they decided to revive their family legacy by establishing Penhó Wines on their 15-hectare property, Quinta de Penhó. This picturesque estate sits atop a mountain, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding valley.

Penhó Wines embodies the spirit of a "garage winery."  Production began in a small, renovated house built by the family in the 18th century.  Here, tradition meets practicality, with fermentation occurring in repurposed granite mills that have stood for centuries.

Sustainability is a core principle at Penhó Wines. They meticulously cultivate their vineyards using organic farming methods, promoting biodiversity and fostering a healthy environment for the vines.  Furthermore, they practice dryland viticulture, relying solely on natural rainfall to nourish the grapes. This dedication to minimal intervention allows the true character of the terroir to shine through in the finished wines.

Penhó Wines showcases the potential of Vinho Verde's native grape varieties.  They cultivate five white grapes – Arinto, Azal, Loureiro, Alvarinho, and Trajadura – and one red grape, Vinhão.  These grapes thrive in the region's cool, humid climate, contributing to the wines' characteristic freshness and vibrant acidity.

The winemaking process at Penhó is a testament to their dedication to natural methods.  Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness and undergo a short maceration before gentle pressing.  Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts; the wines see minimal filtration or manipulation. This philosophy allows the grapes' natural characteristics and the terroir's influence to express themselves fully.

Penhó Wines is a family-run operation, with each member contributing their expertise.  The family's dedication is evident in every bottle, from meticulous viticulture to the hands-on production process.  Penho Wines is still young, but its commitment to quality, minimal intervention, and showcasing Vinho Verde's soul has already garnered recognition within the world of natural wines. Penhó Wines promises to be a name to watch in the coming years as they continue to refine their craft and expand their offerings.
