A vibrant, skin‑fermented expression of one of Portugal’s most iconic white grapes. Made in tiny batches inside their urban winery in Belém, this wine takes the aromatic precision of Alvarinho and pushes it into deeper, more textural territory. A short period of skin contact brings a gentle amber hue, layered aromatics, and a tactile grip that feels both ancient and refreshingly modern. It’s Alvarinho with attitude — still bright and lifted, but carrying a quiet wildness that makes each sip more compelling than the last.

On the palate, it balances citrus and stone‑fruit purity with subtle tannins, savoury herbs, and a mineral edge shaped by native yeasts and minimal intervention. The result is a wine that feels alive: structured yet fluid, aromatic yet grounded, expressive without ever losing its sense of place. Behind it are Catarina Moreira and David Picard, the biologist‑anthropologist duo whose curiosity and cultural storytelling define Adega Belém’s approach. Their curtimenta wines are an exploration of texture, tradition, and the ways fermentation can reveal new sides of familiar grapes.

This Alvarinho pairs beautifully with richer seafood dishes, grilled vegetables, spiced poultry, or anything that benefits from a wine with both freshness and grip. Produced in micro‑lots with a low‑intervention philosophy, it’s a distinctive take on Alvarinho — textural, aromatic, and unmistakably Adega Belém.

Adega Belém Urban Winery

A bold and imaginative winemaking initiative founded by Catarina Moreira and David Picard—two former academics with roots in biology and anthropology who chose to pivot from scholarly pursuits to the sensory art of viticulture. Their journey into wine began unconventionally, with an early experimental batch fermented in a Lisbon bathroom. Driven by curiosity and creativity, they pursued formal studies in oenology and viticulture across Portugal and Germany, refining their understanding of the science behind the craft.

In 2016, they converted a former car repair shop in Lisbon’s Belém neighborhood into a fully functional winery. The space was carefully reimagined to serve its new purpose, featuring earthquake-proof design and energy-efficient systems that reflect their commitment to environmental responsibility. What sets Adega Belém apart is not only its urban location—rare in European winemaking—but its dedication to sustainable and low-intervention practices. Collaborating with local grape growers along Portugal’s ecologically rich Atlantic coast, Catarina and David focus on spontaneous fermentation to preserve native yeast diversity, using techniques that honor both the land and the microbiological uniqueness of each harvest.

Their production is intentionally small, with around 15,000 bottles released annually across 13 to 14 distinctive wines. Each bottle embodies scientific precision, artistic exploration, and a deep respect for biodiversity. Even the labels tell a story—many are illustrated by their daughters, lending a playful, family-driven touch to their brand identity. In a city better known for its azulejos and custard tarts, Adega Belém brings wine right to the heart of Lisbon, offering tastings, workshops, and lively community events that connect science and wine in compelling, accessible ways.

Whether you're a seasoned oenophile or simply wine-curious, Adega Belém invites you to explore the intricate beauty of urban winemaking, where every bottle is an experiment and every sip, an education.
