A stellar example of Dão’s expressive terroir, crafted from a balanced blend of two indigenous white grape varieties—approximately 50% Bical and 50% Malvasia Fina. These varieties, known for their natural acidity and aromatic finesse, are cultivated in vineyards planted on Dão’s signature granite and clay soils. The grapes, grown under conditions that demand early harvest due to a notably hot vintage, are picked from late August to early September when the fruit reaches optimal ripeness while still retaining refreshing vibrancy.

At the winery, the winemaking process is executed with a blend of traditional techniques and modern precision. The whole grape bunches are gently pressed and then allowed a prolonged skin contact period of 25 days, a practice that extracts subtle phenolic compounds and structure without overwhelming the delicate aromatics. Just before the completion of fermentation, the must is split into two distinct fractions—half is transferred into beeswax-coated amphorae to capture earthy, mineral nuances, and the other half is directed into temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve crisp, pure fruit flavors.

Both fractions are then aged separately for a period of six months each, a carefully orchestrated dual approach that serves to enhance the wine’s complexity while accentuating the contrasting influences of traditional amphora and modern stainless steel aging. At bottling, a precise addition of 20 mg of SO₂ is implemented to safeguard the wine's freshness, ensuring that each bottle is a faithful reflection of its unique production process and the Dão region’s distinctive character.

In the glass, Bical/Malvasia Fina Curtimenta displays a luminous, pale straw-yellow hue that hints at its delicate construction. The nose is elegantly subtle, with aromas reminiscent of hay and a burst of citrus zest—a bright, inviting bouquet that speaks to the varietal purity of Bical and Malvasia Fina. On the palate, the wine is light and refreshing, its vibrant acidity balancing a delicate structure that reveals layers of lemon and white peach, accompanied by an undercurrent of floral and herbaceous nuances.

Hugo Pinheiro

Hugo Pinheiro has established himself as a respected vigneron in the Dão region, building on nearly two decades of hands-on experience that culminated in the launch of his eponymous label in 2021. His journey in winemaking began with a deep immersion in the traditions and challenges of the region, a period during which he refined a philosophy that emphasizes minimal intervention and respect for the land. Settled in the heart of Dão, Pinheiro’s approach marries time-honored practices with modern insights, ensuring that every vintage captures the genuine character of a terroir steeped in history and natural beauty.

The vineyards under his care stretch over approximately three hectares, planted between 480 and 510 meters above sea level on a mosaic of granite, shale, and clay soils. Within these plots, both white and red grape varieties flourish—such as Encruzado, Cerceal, Bical, and Malvasia Fina for the whites, alongside Jaen, Alfrocheiro Preto, Touriga Nacional, and Rufete for the reds. Sustainable viticultural practices are central to Hugo Pinheiro's work; organic techniques, low-yield management, and meticulous hand-harvesting ensure that each grape is nurtured to express intense flavor, vibrant acidity, and a pronounced mineral character reflective of Dão’s ancient soils.

In the winery, Pinheiro’s commitment to authenticity is evident at every step of production. Grapes are carefully processed in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to allow spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, preserving the vineyard’s natural expression. This minimal intervention strategy produces wines that consistently reveal layered profiles of bright citrus, ripe orchard fruit, and a striking mineral backbone, all rounded off by an elegant, persistent finish. For the wine-educated reader, Hugo Pinheiro’s creations offer a vivid snapshot of Dão’s distinctive terroir, where sustainable practices and a passion for tradition coalesce into wines of exceptional clarity, character, and finesse.
