A craft cider from Portugal's Minho region that is a pure expression of a specific apple blend. The cider is made exclusively from 100% apples, with a precise composition of 40% Porta da Loja, 30% Malapio, 10% Verdeal, 10% Pipo de Basto, and 10% other varieties. The producer's commitment to sustainability is evident in their cidermaking philosophy, which includes no added sulfites and a spontaneous fermentation process without any other additions. The apples are fermented in stainless steel, and 30% of the juice undergoes a maceration period during fermentation, a technique that adds to the cider's textural and aromatic complexity. The cider is unfiltered and has a final alcohol content of 6% by volume.

Learn more about

Nua is a Portuguese cider producer in the Minho region, a location with a long tradition of producing "apple wine." The brand was co-founded by Miguel Viseu, the winemaker of Saravá and other natural wine labels; Tiago Sampaio, the winemaker behind Uivo Natural Wines and Folias de Baco; and a third partner named João. The founders met in Mozambique in 2014 and later embarked on this cidermaking venture with a shared passion for crafting natural, artisanal beverages. They established their cidery in Ponte de Lima, a town in the heart of the Minho, to be close to the source of their raw materials and to honor the region's heritage of cider production.

The brand's philosophy is rooted in a commitment to sustainability, which is seamlessly integrated from the orchard to the bottle. Rather than owning large commercial orchards, Nua sources its apples exclusively from small, local family-owned orchards in the Minho. This practice supports the local economy and helps preserve regional biodiversity by encouraging the cultivation of indigenous Portuguese apple varieties. These traditional types, such as Porta da Loja, Malápio, and Pipo de Basto, are well-adapted to the local climate and give the ciders their unique character. In the cellar, they embrace a minimal intervention approach, relying on spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and avoiding the addition of sulfites or other additives. By abstaining from filtering, they ensure their ciders are a true and transparent expression of the fruit. This holistic focus on local sourcing, community support, and low-intervention production defines Nua's sustainable ethos.
