A vibrant, textural wine that represents a powerful commitment to regional tradition and minimal-intervention winemaking in the Basto sub-region of Vinho Verde. Its name, "Suba," which translates to "climb," is a direct homage to the ancient 'ramadas' trellis system still utilized in their vineyards, which requires winemakers to climb ladders to harvest the grapes, underscoring the labor-intensive, hands-on, and culturally rooted approach of the producer. In terms of sustainability, Peluda Vinhos's overall philosophy, championed by winemaker Mariana Pala, incorporates a holistic, natural farming model, notably using horses and donkeys to graze and naturally fertilize the granite and schist soils during the winter, thereby avoiding chemical fertilizers.

This sparkling wine is crafted from the Espadeiro grape, an indigenous red variety known for its generous acidity and bright fruit profile. It is made using the pétillant naturel (Pet Nat) method, also known as the ancestral method. This process involves bottling the wine before its primary alcoholic fermentation, allowing it to finish inside the bottle, and trapping the naturally produced carbon dioxide to create a gentle, elegant effervescence. Crucially, the wine is unfiltered, and no commercial yeasts or sugars are added, resulting in a naturally cloudy appearance and a commitment to minimal product additions. The resulting rosé presents with a captivating salmon pink or copper hue. On the palate, educated wine enthusiasts will appreciate its tangy, crisp dryness and abundant natural bubbles, showcasing dominant red fruit aromas of raspberry and strawberry, often balanced by more exotic notes like mango, persimmon, and a distinct citrus zest. The intense, refreshing acidity and vibrant fruit make it a highly appetizing wine that speaks authentically to the unique, high-altitude terroir of Basto.

Peluda Vinhos

Peluda Vinhos, an engaging multigenerational wine project nestled in the Minho region of northern Portugal, distinguishes itself within Vinho Verde by marrying deep family tradition with a dynamic, low-intervention philosophy championed by the young winemaker, Mariana Pala.

This producer is situated in the sub-region of Basto, a distinctly mountainous and largely continental area isolated from the Atlantic's direct influence. It gives its wines a unique character of vibrant freshness, structured acidity, and mineral depth from the granite and schist soils. A key pillar of Peluda's uniqueness lies in their approach to sustainable vineyard management: they employ a form of natural, integrated fertilization by allowing horses and donkeys to graze in their 17 hectares of vineyards during the winter, which naturally enriches the soil and avoids the need for chemical fertilizers. Furthermore, their winemaking emphasizes minimal intervention to genuinely express the terroir and the indigenous Basto grape varieties like Azal, a white grape that thrives in this cooler, high-altitude setting, achieving full ripeness later in the season.

In the cellar, Mariana Pala favors traditional methods, such as controlled methods. Yet, cool-temperature fermentation in stainless steel tanks and often bottles their wines, including popular Suba Pet-Nats, without filtration, showcasing a cloudy, authentic style that appeals directly to the educated wine enthusiast's preference for raw, textural, and traditionally-made expressions of Vinho Verde. This combination of utilizing livestock for natural fertilization, embracing challenging, high-elevation terroir, and employing minimal-intervention cellar techniques makes Peluda Vinhos a standout example of a forward-thinking Portuguese producer dedicated to both environmental responsibility and the authentic, regional spirit of Minho.
