A more refined and aged expression of Portuguese brandy, crafted from the distillation of the estate's white wines, primarily those made from Maria Gomes and Bical grapes. The viticulture mirrors the estate's dedication to quality, with grapes sourced from their diverse vineyard plots, each contributing unique nuances to the final distillate. Following fermentation and distillation in traditional copper alembics, the Aguardente Vínica Velha undergoes a crucial aging process. This prolonged maturation occurs in small, seasoned oak barrels, typically French or Portuguese oak, allowing the spirit to develop complexity and depth. The length of aging is a key factor in the spirit’s character, and the "Velha" designation indicates a significant maturation period. During this time, the spirit interacts with the oak, extracting tannins, vanillin, and other aromatic compounds contributing to its rich profile.

Tasting notes for Quinta das Bágeiras Aguardente Vínica Velha reveal a complex and elegant spirit. The aging process imparts a deep amber hue, and the aroma is characterized by notes of dried fruit, such as figs and raisins, alongside subtle hints of vanilla, caramel, and toasted oak. The palate is smooth and velvety, with a well-integrated balance of sweetness and spice. Flavors of dried apricot, nutmeg, and a delicate woody character emerge, leading to a long and lingering finish. The oak aging contributes a refined complexity, adding layers of flavor and a silky texture. Unlike the younger Bagaceira, this Vínica Velha is meant for slow sipping, allowing the drinker to appreciate the intricate interplay of flavors and aromas. It is best enjoyed neat, perhaps after a meal, where its warmth and complexity can be fully savored.
