A profound expression of the Bairrada region, crafted by the dedicated duo of Luís Patrão and Eduarda Dias. Founded in 2005, the family-run Vadio estate is deeply rooted in the village of Poutena, where its philosophy centers on authenticity through native grape varieties and minimal intervention winemaking. This release is crafted from 100 percent Baga, a grape renowned for producing wines of immense structure and longevity. The fruit is sourced from a tiny, 0.3-hectare hillside plot with a northern exposure and soils that transition from sandy to clay-limestone. Due to the extremely low yields of this specific vineyard, the wine is produced only in exceptional years and is limited to fewer than 1,300 bottles.

Commitment to the land is the cornerstone of the Vadio estate. The team employs regenerative viticulture, treating the vineyards as living ecosystems that foster biodiversity through cover crops, natural plant-based treatments, and the protection of surrounding forests and waterways. This holistic approach extends to the cellar, where the grapes undergo vinification in small tanks—partially using whole bunches—and fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged in a 500-liter used French oak barrel to ensure that the final product remains a pure, unadulterated reflection of its terroir.

Upon pouring, the 2017 Rexarte reveals a deep ruby hue, preparing the senses for its sophisticated aromatic profile. The nose is exceptionally expressive, characterized by the purity of ripe red fruits, particularly sour cherry and raspberry, complemented by complex balsamic notes, hints of eucalyptus, camphor, and a touch of dark, bitter chocolate. On the palate, the wine demonstrates a perfect equilibrium between power and elegance. It is medium-bodied with vivid acidity, polished, chalk-like tannins, and subtle floral elements. The finish is remarkably balanced and persistent, suggesting that this vintage possesses the structural integrity to evolve beautifully in the bottle for years to come. It serves as a quintessential choice for those who appreciate wines that clearly express their origin while maintaining a distinct, artisanal identity.

Vadio

Vadio Wines, nestled in the village of Poutena within Portugal's Bairrada region, is a small, family-run project founded in 2005 by Luís Patrão. Their mission is clear: to revive the heritage of Bairrada by crafting authentic DOC Bairrada wines using traditional grape varieties.

Across 13 vineyards in Vale D. Pedro, totaling 10 hectares, Vadio cultivates a mosaic of 27 distinct plots. Their winery, a converted warehouse, reflects their dedication to simplicity and preserving the essence of Bairrada. The focus lies on classic wines that showcase the region's unique character and the personality of the grapes themselves.

Bairrada, itself bathed in the Atlantic influence some 200 kilometers north of Lisbon, boasts rolling hills, valleys, and a distinctive climate. Clay-limestone soils and native grape varieties weave a tapestry of flavors that set Bairrada's wines apart. Known for its long-aging potential in red Baga wines, the region also produces refreshing white and characterful sparkling wines.

Vadio Wines is a labor of love for the Patrão-Dias couple. Luís, a Bairrada native, splits his time between Vadio and his role as winemaking director at Herdade de Coelheiros in Alentejo. Eduarda, his wife, originally from Brazil, manages the daily operations of this family venture. Luís' father, Dinis Patrão, is a champion of organic farming, tending to the vineyards with a dedication that borders on reverence. Viticulturist Hugo Melo, a longtime friend, and cellar workers Filipe Abreu and Dona Lurdes Silva round out this passionate team. Together, they breathe life into Vadio's vision of preserving Bairrada's rich winemaking heritage.
