Vinhos Barbeito's 10-year-old Boal Old Reserve (Medium Sweet) is a distinguished Madeira wine that showcases the unique characteristics of the Boal grape variety. This wine is crafted on the Portuguese island of Madeira, known for its rich winemaking tradition and distinctive fortified wines.

The Boal (also known as Bual) grape is one of the four noble white grape varieties used in Madeira production. It is known for producing medium-sweet wines with a balance of acidity and richness. Vinhos Barbeito, founded in 1948, does not own vineyards but sources high-quality grapes from producers primarily in the regions of Sao Vicente, Camara de Lobos, and Estreito de Camara de Lobos.

In terms of production, this Boal Old Reserve undergoes the traditional Madeira winemaking process. After harvesting, the grapes are crushed, pressed, and fermented. The fermentation is halted at the desired level of sweetness by adding neutral grape spirits, a process known as fortification. What sets this wine apart is its aging process. Barbeito has aged this Boal in French oak casks for over 10 years using the Canteiro method. This traditional aging technique involves storing the casks in warehouses with stable year-round temperatures, allowing the wine to mature naturally and develop its complex flavors.

The result is a medium-sweet Madeira with a rich, sumptuous character. The extended aging imparts fruit notes in syrup, wood, and honey, creating a complex and well-balanced wine that exemplifies the quality and craftsmanship of Vinhos Barbeito's Madeira production.
