Vinhos Barbeito's 10-Year-Old Sercial Old Reserve (Dry) is a fine example of Madeira wine produced on the Portuguese island of Madeira. The wine is made primarily from the Sercial grape variety, which produces dry, crisp wines with high acidity. Barbeito, founded in 1946, is one of the largest Madeira wine producers on the island, though they do not own vineyards. Instead, they purchase grapes from local growers, primarily in the regions of Sao Vicente, Camara de Lobos, and Estreito de Camara de Lobos.

The Sercial grapes used for this wine are typically harvested, crushed, and pressed before fermentation. Unlike sweeter Madeira styles, the juice for Sercial wines is usually separated from the skins before fermentation to maintain its dry character. After fermentation, the wine is fortified with neutral grape spirits to halt the process and increase alcohol content.

This particular Sercial undergoes the traditional "canteiro" aging process for at least 10 years. During this time, the wine matures naturally in oak casks, exposed to the warm temperatures of Madeira's aging lodges without artificial heating. This extended aging contributes to the wine's complex flavors and distinctive Madeira character.

As a 10-year-old Reserve, this Sercial represents a high-quality offering from Barbeito. It showcases the winery's commitment to traditional Madeira production methods. The result is a dry, well-balanced wine that exemplifies the unique characteristics of the Sercial grape variety and the Madeira winemaking style.
