Beyond the Basics: Defining Quality in Port
A Technical Tasting & Discussion with Ryan Opaz
If you have attended a tasting at theLAB before, you know our focus is on opening bottles that tell a specific story. On 15 May, from 18h30-20h, we are moving beyond the introductory level to dissect the factors that define high-quality Port.
Join us for a session led by Ryan Opaz, a member of the Confraria do Vinho do Porto. This masterclass is designed for those who understand the basics but want to look closer at the nuances of production, aging, and the structural markers of greatness.
The Discussion
Rather than a standard history of the region, Ryan will lead a focused conversation on:
- The Anatomy of Quality: We will taste three "entry-level" Ports specifically to use as a baseline. By deconstructing these accessible bottles, we will identify the exact point where a Port transitions from a simple beverage to a complex, age-worthy masterpiece.
- LBV vs. Vintage: A comparative look at technical production differences and how these choices manifest in the glass.
- The Collector’s Eye: Identifying the structural markers of a wine with long-term aging potential and the practicalities of managing a personal cellar.
- Evolution in the Bottle: Understanding how primary fruit transforms into tertiary complexity over decades.
The Flight
We have curated a flight that moves from the essential to the extraordinary, including:
- The Comparative Trio: Three accessible, "entry-level" Ports chosen to demonstrate that even at the lowest price points, Port remains a unique, terroir-driven product.
- Quevedo Q-Lab Mosaic White Port: A look at the modern, experimental side of White Port.
- Quevedo Special Reserva Tawny: Exploring the balance of wood-aging and oxidative precision.
- Soares Duarte 2017 Vintage Port (Meio Seco): A rare opportunity to taste a Vintage Port with a unique sweetness profile from a legendary year.
