Dive into the unexpected with Aphros' Yakkos Vinhão Grande Reserva, a sparkling red wine that breaks the mold. Crafted entirely from the Vinhão grape, this unique sparkler hails from the Vinho Verde region of Portugal. Unlike most sparkling wines, Yakkos undergoes a classic fermentation method, similar to Champagne. The grapes are fermented in granite tanks, followed by a second fermentation in the bottle – a process that can last for over five years. This extended aging on the lees (lees are spent yeast cells) adds complexity and richness to the wine.

The result is a vibrant red wine with playful bubbles. Expect aromas of dark fruits like blackberries, raspberries, and plums, mingling with intriguing hints of tobacco and chocolate. The wine is surprisingly powerful and full-bodied on the palate, with round tannins that provide a smooth texture. Despite its strength, the wine maintains a refreshing acidity, making it a captivating and food-friendly sparkler. Enjoy Yakkos Vinhão Grande Reserva alongside grilled meats, creamy cheeses, or even adventurous vegetarian dishes.

Aphros

Architect, educator, sculptor, and advocate of the Waldorf educational movement, Vasco Croft founded his winery on the family estate after an unusual encounter with a Buddhist monk. This event, which Vasco describes as a personal meeting with Dionysus. In 2003, he decided to start a wine project in Casal do Paço, a semi-abandoned estate that has been in his family since the 17th century.

Casal do Paço is now recognized as a model ecological winery committed to the preservation of its ecosystems that include not only vineyards but also entire forests of acacias, oaks, eucalyptus, and old trees, home to wild boars, foxes and eagles.
