A legendary herbal spirit crafted by the Carthusian monks of France, whose secret recipe dates back to the 18th century. Still produced today in the Aiguenoire distillery in Isère, this liqueur is made from a meticulous blend of 130 botanicals—including herbs, roots, flowers, bark, and spices—many of which are ground and prepared by the monks themselves at the Grande Chartreuse monastery. The process involves distillation to capture aromatic compounds, followed by maceration to extract color and active ingredients. Afterward, the liqueur is aged in large oak vats, allowing it to develop depth and complexity before bottling.

The striking green hue of Chartreuse Verte is entirely natural, derived from the chlorophyll of the plants used in its creation. With an alcohol content of 55%, it is notably potent, yet its power is balanced by a remarkable aromatic richness. The nose is intensely herbaceous and peppery, with layers of mint, pine sap, citrus zest, and subtle floral notes. On the palate, it opens with a fresh burst of mint and citrus, followed by vegetal and spicy undertones that evolve into bittersweet tea and a lingering warmth.

This liqueur is revered not only for its flavor but also for its versatility. It can be enjoyed chilled as a digestif, served over ice, or used as a bold ingredient in cocktails such as the Last Word or Bijou. Its complexity makes it a favorite among bartenders and connoisseurs alike, offering a sensory experience that is both invigorating and contemplative.

Chartreuse Verte is more than a spirit—it’s a piece of living history. With only two monks entrusted with the full recipe, its production remains a closely guarded tradition. For those who appreciate depth, authenticity, and a touch of mystique in their glass, this liqueur stands as a singular expression of craftsmanship and devotion.
