A unique white wine that reflects the challenges and triumphs of its vintage, crafted from the Roupeiro grape and aged in traditional clay amphorae. The growing season began with a dry winter followed by a wet spring that replenished the soil’s moisture. Milder spring and summer temperatures slowed the vine cycle, but a scorching heatwave in early August presented a significant challenge. Fortunately, the Roupeiro grape, being well-suited to such extremes, thrived under these conditions. Herdade do Esporão’s commitment to organic farming and a broader sustainability program ensures that the grapes reflect the unique terroir and its resilience.

The winemaking process for this wine intentionally embraces ancestral methods. The Roupeiro grapes were partially destemmed and crushed before fermenting in talhas lined with laurel pitch. Indigenous yeasts guided the fermentation process, and the wine remained in contact with its lees until early December. This extended contact adds a significant layer of complexity and character to the final wine.

Visually, the wine boasts a dry straw color. The aroma is a captivating mix of white fruit compote, hints of dried vegetables, lemon zest, and grapefruit peel. On the palate, these characteristics suggest a complex and intriguing white wine with a potential for richness, balancing acidity, and a touch of minerality. The result is a savory and textural wine representing its origin and the ancient art of talha winemaking.

A bottle of Herdade do Esporão wine with a label that includes the brand name and '2018'.
