A field blend red wine born from the rugged, high-altitude vineyards of Trás-os-Montes, specifically in the village of Sendim in Miranda do Douro. The vines, many over 90 years old, grow in granitic and schist soils rich in quartz and mica, and are cultivated using organic and sustainable methods without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. The grapes—an eclectic mix of traditional red varieties like Tinta Gorda, Bastardo, Tinta Fina, and Olho de Rei, along with a small percentage of white grapes such as Donzelinho Branco and Malvasia—are hand-harvested in small 20kg boxes to preserve their integrity. Fermentation begins spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in a granite lagar, where the grapes are foot-trodden with stems, followed by three days of skin contact. The wine finishes fermentation in seasoned French oak barrels and is aged for ten months before bottling.

On the palate, Picotes Tinto is fresh and vivid, with elegant notes of blackberry and currant, lifted by crunchy acidity and subtle hints of cedar, graphite, and violet. Its texture is both refined and rustic, reflecting the wild beauty of the Arribas do Douro landscape and the ancestral winemaking techniques preserved by Carla and António Picotês.

The Trás-os-Montes region, where Picotes Wines is located, is known for its unique terroir and climate, which contribute to the distinct characteristics of its wines. The region's historical significance in Portuguese viticulture is well-documented, with wine production in Portugal dating back to at least 2000 BC, influenced by various ancient civilizations including the Tartessians, Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans.

Carla and António Picotês, the current winemakers, are committed to sustainable practices in their wine production. They emphasize the use of natural methods and minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery, which aligns with a broader movement towards sustainability in the wine industry. This approach not only preserves the environment but also enhances the authenticity and quality of their wines.
