This delicious late-harvest wine is crafted from a field blend of varieties, with Gouveio as the predominant grape. Sourced from vineyards nestled in the Cima-Corgo subregion of Alijó, at an average altitude of 600 meters, the vines are rooted in schist and granite-derived soils. These ancient vines, exceeding 70 years of age, yield exceptionally low crops, concentrating the flavors and complexity within the grapes.

Harvesting grapes affected by noble rot was a meticulous process, with an average of three pickings undertaken in each vineyard between the beginning of November and the end of December. Following harvest, the grapes underwent a cold soak for 3-4 days before pressing. Fermentation proceeded slowly over six months in used barrels, with careful temperature control. The wine then underwent an extended aging period on the fine lees for 40 months, developing its complex character and textural richness. Bottled in July 2020, this wine has had ample time to harmonize and express its unique personality.

On the palate, Olho no Pé Colheita Tardia 2013 unfolds with a captivating golden hue and a complex interplay of aromas. Expect a delicate bouquet of honeyed citrus fruits, dried apricots, and candied nuts, intertwined with subtle notes of spice and a touch of minerality. The palate is a harmonious blend of flavors, showcasing a luscious sweetness balanced by a refreshing acidity. The wine displays a rich and unctuous texture with a long and persistent finish.

This wine is a testament to Uivo's dedication to minimal intervention and sustainable viticulture. The result is an elegant and expressive wine, reflecting the unique terroir of the Cima-Corgo region. Olho no Pé Colheita Tardia 2013 is a perfect accompaniment to desserts, blue cheeses, or enjoyed on its own as a contemplative meditation.

Uivo

Uivo, a rising star in the Douro Valley, has been making waves in the Portuguese wine scene since its inception in 2007. Founded by Tiago Sampaio, a passionate winemaker with a PhD in viticulture and oenology from Oregon, Uivo has quickly established itself as a producer of exceptional natural wines that capture the essence of the region's unique terroir.

The Uivo vineyards are situated in the heart of the Douro Valley, near Alijo in the high flatlands of the Cima Corgo, known as the planalto. These vineyards benefit from elevations ranging from 500 to 700 meters, contributing to the distinctive textures and flavors found in Uivo's. The region's steep slopes, schist and granite-derived soils, and intense sunlight create an ideal environment for grape cultivation.

Uivo's approach to viticulture is characterized by minimal intervention and a deep respect for tradition. The winery embraces organic and biodynamic practices, avoiding synthetic chemicals and prioritizing biodiversity in the vineyards. This commitment to sustainable farming allows the grapes to express their true character, reflecting the nuances of the Douro terroir.

Tiago Sampaio's winemaking philosophy centers around capturing the pure expression of the Douro in each bottle. His approach emphasizes natural fermentation and minimal additions, resulting in wines known for their purity of fruit, vibrant acidity, and a strong sense of place. Sampaio's commitment to natural winemaking is evident in his methods: no added yeast, no filtration, and no fining at bottling.

Uivo's dedication to sustainability extends beyond its viticultural practices. The winery strongly emphasizes energy efficiency and waste reduction, incorporating renewable energy sources and recycling materials into its operations. This holistic approach to sustainability aligns with its commitment to producing wines that are both exceptional in quality and environmentally responsible.

Uivo's portfolio showcases a range of distinctive wines that highlight the Douro's potential for producing exceptional natural wines. Among their offerings are captivating pét-nats and wines featuring the refreshing, floral aroma of Moscatel Gallego grapes. The Uivo Curtido, for example, is a skin-contact wine made from 100% Moscatel Galego, offering a complex and mysterious profile with full structure.

Tiago Sampaio operates from the old co-op winery building in Sanfins do Douro, which he purchased a few years ago. This facility not only produces Uivo wines but also houses other winemaking projects. The winery showcases antique talhas (traditional clay amphorae) gifted by Vasco Croft, adding a touch of historical significance to the modern winemaking approach.

Uivo is poised to become a leading force in the Douro's burgeoning natural wine scene with its focus on quality, sustainability, and a deep respect for tradition. As wine enthusiasts continue seeking authentic, terroir-driven wines, Uivo's offerings stand as a testament to the Douro Valley's potential to produce exceptional natural wines that captivate the senses and tell the story of their origin.
