A carefully crafted red blend wine of 40% Touriga Nacional, 30% Syrah, 20% Castelão, and 10% Tinta Roriz (also known as Aragonez) reflects a deliberate approach to blending indigenous and international grape varieties. These grapes thrive in the estate's vineyards, benefiting from the cooling influence of the Atlantic winds and the mineral-rich, clay-limestone soils abundant in fossilized marine deposits. The viticulture emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the vines to express their natural character and the nuances of the terroir. Hand-harvesting ensures careful selection of the grapes, preserving their quality.

The winemaking process is designed to highlight the freshness and aromatic complexity of the blend. Fermentation occurs with a combination of whole bunches and destemmed grapes, with the press filled with 80% destemmed grapes and 20% whole bunches. Daily treading with little extraction is employed as a gentle technique to preserve the wine's delicate structure and fruit-forward character. The wine is then aged for 10 months in stainless steel tanks, a practice that preserves the wine's vibrancy and avoids the influence of oak. Minimal sulfur additions are used, reflecting a commitment to natural winemaking practices.

On the nose, 'Fóssil' Tinto presents subtle aromas of red and black fruits, such as cherry, plum, and blackberry, intertwined with floral notes, herbal undertones, and a distinct mineral character, reflecting the influence of the fossil-rich soils. The Touriga Nacional contributes notes of violets and black fruit, while the Syrah adds spice and complexity. The Castelão and Tinta Roriz contribute red fruit and earthy notes. The absence of oak allows the pure fruit aromas to shine through, creating a lively and expressive wine. The palate is elegant, with an enveloping texture and a refreshing acidity that imparts a gastronomic quality to the wine. Its vibrant acidity and soft, supple tannins provide a balanced and refreshing structure. The wine's complexity is further enhanced by subtle savory notes and a pronounced minerality, reflecting the unique terroir of the Vale da Capucha estate. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering fruitiness, earthy notes, and a subtle saline nuance, showcasing the distinctive character of the 'Fóssil' Tinto. This wine is a testament to the potential of the Torres Vedras region and the producer's dedication to crafting wines that authentically express their terroir. The balance of fruit, minerality, and freshness makes it a versatile companion to red meat dishes and soft cheeses, offering wine enthusiasts an authentic and expressive taste of the Lisbon wine region.

Vale da Capucha

Vale da Capucha, a beacon of traditional yet progressive winemaking within the Lisbon region, is nestled in Quinta de S. José, Carvalhal, Torres Vedras. This family-owned estate, steeped in a rich tapestry of winemaking tradition, spans five generations, a testament to the enduring passion for viticulture that has defined the Marques family. The current steward of this legacy, Pedro Marques, a prominent figure in the Portuguese wine landscape, represents the fifth generation to dedicate his life to the art of wine.

Pedro Marques's stewardship, commencing in 2007, marked a pivotal moment in Vale da Capucha's history. His approach, informed by extensive travels across Portugal and other cooler-climate wine regions, brought a fresh perspective to the family's winemaking practices. Inspired by these experiences, Pedro embarked on a transformative journey, implementing significant changes that would reshape the estate's identity. Recognizing the importance of sustainable viticulture, he spearheaded the transition to organic farming practices, a move that reflected a deep respect for the environment and a commitment to producing wines of exceptional quality.

The estate's vineyards, strategically located approximately eight kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean, benefit from the region's unique maritime climate. The cooling influence of the Atlantic winds, combined with the clay-limestone soils, contributes to the distinctive characteristics of Vale da Capucha's wines, particularly the Arinto variety. This grape, celebrated for its austere, limestone, mineral, and citrus notes, thrives in these conditions, yielding wines of remarkable freshness and complexity.

Vale da Capucha's commitment to organic and sustainable practices extends beyond environmental stewardship; it is an integral part of their winemaking philosophy. By prioritizing natural methods, they enhance the authenticity and expression of their wines, allowing the terroir to shine through. Pedro Marques' dedication to these principles has not only elevated the quality of Vale da Capucha's wines but has also positioned the estate as a benchmark of success in the region. Maintaining a legacy that spans over two centuries, Vale da Capucha seamlessly blends traditional winemaking practices with modern sustainable techniques, ensuring that the essence of their terroir is preserved for generations to come.
