A pure expression of the Colares terroir, crafted entirely from the indigenous Ramisco grape, harvested during the last week of September. This late harvest, typical of the region, allows the Ramisco grapes to achieve optimal ripeness and concentration in the cool maritime climate. The viticulture is defined by the unique sandy soils of Colares, which necessitate deep planting to reach moisture and protect the vines from phylloxera, resulting in the use of ungrafted rootstock. Following harvest, approximately 70% of the grapes are destemmed, and all are crushed, initiating the winemaking process. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled, closed stainless steel tanks, with careful pumping over to extract color and tannins from the robust Ramisco skins. This controlled fermentation allows for a consistent and balanced extraction, which is crucial for the wine's structure and longevity. The aging process is a hallmark of Arenae Tinto, beginning with five years of maturation in large, exotic wood vats. This prolonged aging in neutral vessels allows the wine to develop complexity and soften its tannins without imparting overt oak flavors. Subsequently, the wine spends an additional year in small, five-year-old oak barrels, adding subtle layers of complexity and refinement while preserving the Ramisco's inherent character.

Tasting notes for the 2016 Arenae Tinto reveal a light-bodied red wine with a complex and evolving profile. The extended aging in exotic wood and oak has softened the typically assertive tannins of Ramisco, resulting in a more approachable and elegant structure. The aromatic profile is characterized by notes of red fruit, such as cranberry and sour cherry, which have evolved into dried fruit and earthy undertones. Subtle hints of spice, vanilla, and toasted oak, derived from aging, complement the primary fruit aromas. The palate is defined by its vibrant acidity, a signature characteristic of Ramisco, providing a refreshing counterpoint to the wine's complexity. The tannins, while present, are well-integrated and refined, contributing to a smooth and silky texture. The finish is long and lingering, with a persistent minerality and a subtle savory note, reflecting the distinctive terroir of Colares and the meticulous aging practices employed by Adega Regional de Colares.

Adega Regional de Colares

The Adega Regional de Colares, a wine region in the Sintra hills west of Lisbon, boasts a unique viticulture and history shaped by its specific terroir. Their viticulture starts in the sand. Unlike most wine regions in Portugal, Colares sits on a bed of sand left behind by ancient seabeds. These sandy soils are highly draining, forcing the vines to struggle for water and nutrients. This stress translates to intensely concentrated grapes with bold flavors.

Colares stubbornly clings to its own—the red grape Ramisco and the white grape Malvasia de Colares. These resilient varieties thrive in harsh conditions and contribute to the region's distinct character.

Due to the strong Atlantic winds, vines in Colares are traditionally trained low to the ground in a system called "en cordão" (cordon). This protects the grapes from wind damage and promotes even ripening.

The Adega Regional de Colares has a long and distinguished history. As early as the 13th century, the Portuguese court prized its wines. King D. Afonso IV even declared them exclusive to the royal table!

The devastating phylloxera outbreak of the late 19th century hit Colares hard. Unlike most regions that grafted their vines onto American rootstocks immune to the pest, Colares struggled to find a compatible rootstock for its sandy soils, resulting in a significant decline in production.

In recent decades, there has been a renewed interest in Colares wines. Winemakers are experimenting with new techniques while staying true to traditional grape varieties and low-intervention methods.

The result? Adega Regional de Colares wines are known for their minerality, acidity, and complexity. The red Ramisco produces wines with intense aromas of red and black fruits, violets, and earth, with firm tannins that soften with age. The white Malvasia de Colares offers a refreshing bouquet of citrus, white flowers, and a touch of salinity with a crisp and mineral finish. These are not your average wines; they are a taste of history and a testament to the enduring spirit of Colares.
