A tribute to Alentejo's ancient talha (amphora) winemaking tradition. Crafted in Vila Alva, a region deeply connected to this historical practice, the wine was made in partnership with friends at XXVI Talhas, reinforcing a sense of community, tradition, and shared passion for authentic winemaking.
Produced from a blend of Aragonês, Trincadeira, and a few other carefully selected indigenous Portuguese varieties, this wine reflects the region's unique characteristics. The vineyards, rooted in limestone and clay soils, benefit from the Atlantic influence, ensuring a balanced ripening process that preserves freshness and natural acidity.
Fermentation occurs in large clay talhas, following the traditional method that allows for gentle skin contact, extracting delicate tannins and complex aromatics. This technique promotes slow micro-oxygenation, resulting in a silky texture and layered depth, all without the influence of oak. The wine remains unfined and unfiltered, preserving its raw authenticity and allowing subtle earthy and mineral nuances to emerge.
The 2022 Amphora Tinto is medium-bodied, with a vibrant profile of fresh red fruit, wild herbs, and delicate spice. The tannins are present but refined, while the natural acidity gives the wine an energetic lift. To add another layer of uniqueness, the talented Pedro Almeida designed the label, making each bottle a reflection of history and a work of art.
This wine is a journey through time, deeply connected to the roots of winemaking and the culture of talhas. A true expression of sharing, friendship, and tradition, it is a testament to Hugo Mendes’ dedication to minimal-intervention, terroir-driven wines.
