A distinctive red wine expression from the Pero Negro vineyard, focusing on the Miuda grape variety, a lesser-known indigenous Portuguese red grape. The vineyard's old vines, ranging from 30 to 80 years, are planted on clay-limestone soils, benefiting from the cooling influence of the Atlantic winds that characterize the Torres Vedras region. The viticulture adheres to a philosophy of minimal intervention, encouraging the vines to express their natural character and the nuances of the terroir. Hand-harvesting ensures meticulous selection, preserving the quality of the Miuda grapes. Las Vedras employs artisanal winemaking techniques in the winery, including destemming and fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. Extended aging in used oak barrels is a key component of the winemaking process, adding subtle complexity and texture without imparting overt oak flavors. Minimal sulfur additions reflect a commitment to a more natural approach.

Tasting notes for Las Vedras Tinto Miuda Pero Negro reveal a lighter-bodied red wine with a unique and expressive profile. The Miuda grape contributes a delicate aromatic profile characterized by notes of red berries, such as wild strawberry and cranberry, accompanied by subtle floral and earthy undertones. The used oak aging imparts subtle hints of spice and a smooth texture, complementing the wine's inherent fruitiness. The palate is defined by its vibrant acidity and delicate tannins, creating a balanced and refreshing structure. The wine's complexity is further enhanced by subtle savory notes and a distinct minerality, reflecting the influence of the clay-limestone soils and the maritime climate. The finish is long and persistent, with a lingering fruitiness and a subtle earthy nuance, showcasing the unique character of the Miuda grape and the meticulous winemaking practices employed by Las Vedras. This wine demonstrates the potential of lesser-known indigenous varieties and the producer's dedication to crafting wines that authentically express their terroir.

Las Vedras

Las Vedras is a wine label born from the passion and vision of Sónia Raposo and Pedro Marques. Rooted in the rolling green hills of Torres Vedras, Lisbon, their vineyards benefit from Atlantic winds and a mix of clay-limestone soils. With a combined age of 30 to 80 years, these old vines, spread across several distinct plots, are the heart of their estate. The couple embraces a hands-on approach, employing artisanal and natural winemaking techniques. Low sulfur additions, extended aging in used wood, and careful bottling allow them to craft precise, mature, yet delicate wines that authentically reflect their terroir.

Pedro Marques, already established as a winemaker at Vale de Capucha, brought his expertise to this joint venture. The couple’s dream materialized in 2019 as they acquired and rented multiple plots around Torres Vedras. A particularly poignant chapter of their story involves grapes from a small vineyard planted by the late António Carvalho. Renowned for his fascination with French varieties, Carvalho’s plot is a unique mosaic of Roussanne, Marsanne, Petit Manseng, Viognier, and Indigenous Portuguese grapes. The resulting Limo Las Vedras is a testament to Carvalho’s legacy, showcasing a vibrant and complex profile. While the exact composition of this blend remains elusive, the wine's elegance and depth are undeniable.
