Arribas Wine Company's 2020 Belfo white wine is a celebration of terroir and tradition in Trás-os-Montes. The journey begins in a single, exceptional vineyard located in Peredo de Bemposta. Here, gnarled vines, some reaching 70-90 years old, are planted head-trained on decomposed granite and limestone soils, all nestled amidst the rocky slopes and cliffs of the Arribas. Sustainable viticulture practices ensure these old vines thrive and express the land's unique character.
The 2020 Belfo white is a field blend, meaning it incorporates a diverse mix of indigenous white grape varieties. This adds complexity and reflects the historical tradition of planting multiple varieties together. After meticulous hand-harvesting, the grapes undergo a unique step – a short, six to eight-hour skin maceration while still whole bunch. This technique imbues the wine with subtle textural richness and aromatic complexity.
Following skin contact, the grapes are gently pressed, and the juice begins its journey of natural fermentation in French oak barrels, with 16% being new oak. Indigenous yeasts present on the grapes themselves kickstart this process, allowing the fruit's natural character to blossom. The wine undergoes both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation within the barrels, and rests for ten months on its fine lees. This lees contact adds depth and creaminess to the palate.
Finally, the 2020 Belfo white is bottled without fining or filtration. This minimalist approach allows any natural sediment to develop over time, preserving the wine's raw character and ensuring every sip expresses the soul of the Bemposta vineyard and Arribas' dedication to minimal intervention.
