A palhete that embodies a spirit of exploration and collaboration that has defined the Quilómetro brand since its inception in 2019. This particular release originates from Sendim vineyards, a region where old vines stand as silent witnesses to centuries of viticultural tradition. The choice to focus on Sendim followed the challenging onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which refocused the brand’s efforts on nearby villages and their unique terroirs, revealing hidden gems among Portugal’s venerable wine regions.

The vineyard practices in Sendim are a study in both resilience and meticulous care. The estate’s old vineyards, benefiting from the natural aging of vines and soils rich in character, yield a fruit that speaks of terroir authenticity. In crafting Quilómetro, the decision was made to blend 60% red grape varieties with 40% white grape varieties. This unconventional union seeks to harness the structured depth and ripe intensity of red grapes alongside the aromatic brightness and finesse of white grapes, creating a hybrid expression that defies traditional classifications.

On entering the winery, the grapes undergo a two-week carbonic maceration, a process that encourages whole-cluster fermentation under anaerobic conditions and enhances the fruit’s purity and vibrant expression. This is followed by a gentle crushing and extraction phase lasting between two and three weeks. During this period, the careful handling and extended contact allow for the integration of the diverse phenolic and aromatic compounds found in both red and white grapes, resulting in a wine that simultaneously offers the freshness of a white and the structural components typical of a red.

After the extraction phase, the winemaking process transitions to a thoughtful aging regimen. The freshly extracted wine is transferred into a 500-liter chestnut barrel and three 225-liter French oak barrels, where it ages for a period of one year. This stage imparts subtle oak nuances and adds complexity without overshadowing the fruit’s intrinsic vibrancy. The different barrel types lend a distinctive interplay between the rustic influence of chestnut and the refined character of French oak, harmonizing the wine’s structure and texture.

Following barrel aging, the various fractions are skillfully blended before being left to mature for an additional eighteen months in a temperature-controlled tank. This extended period allows for further integration of flavors and a softening of any remaining tension, culminating in a wine that was bottled in February 2024. In the glass, Quilómetro reveals a deep ruby hue with inviting clarity. The nose unfolds layers of ripe red fruit, intertwined with hints of spice and a delicate, almost ethereal floral lift. On the palate, the wine showcases a compelling balance: vibrant acidity, gentle tannic grip, and a finish that resonates with both the plush character of red varietals and the subtle, refreshing qualities of its white counterparts. Currently, they collaborate with local groups to promote bee safety by advocating for reduced chemical use in agriculture.
